CARNEGIE HALL MAY & JUNE 2010 HIGHLIGHTS

Pianist Piotr Anderszewski continues his Carnegie Hall focus on the music of Polish composer Karol Szymanowski in two performances of chamber music and songs with the Belcea Quartet, soprano Iwona Sobotka, and violinist Henning Kraggerud. On Saturday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m., the program features Szymanowski’s String Quartet No. 1, the solo piano work Metopes, and the song set Slopiewnie, performed alongside Bartók’s Three Hungarian Folksongs from Csík and String Quartet No. 1. The following evening, Sunday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m., Szymanowski’s Mythes for Violin and Piano, Songs of a Fairytale Princess, and String Quartet No. 2 are performed; as well as Janácek’s In the Mists and Schumann’s Märchenbilder.

On Monday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m., the Venice Baroque Orchestra and violinist Giuliano Carmignola, led by Director Andrea Marcon, perform a program dedicated to the Baroque-era music of the ensemble’s native Italy with works by Albinoni, Vivaldi, Geminiani, and Tartini.

Acclaimed bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff and pianist Justus Zeyen return to Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, May 5 at 8:00 p.m. for a recital of songs by Schubert, Frank Martin, and Brahms.

On Friday, May 7 at 10:00 p.m., Carnegie Hall’s Around the Globe series concludes with the Grammy Award-nominated Mexican folk music ensemble Sones de México, a group from Chicago specializing in the various regional styles of son and traditional fandango.

The Weill Music Institute’s annual series of Professional Training Workshops culminates with a workshop on Brahms’s chamber music led by pianist Leon Fleisher, which concludes with two Young Artists Concerts performed by the workshop participants on Saturday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 9 at 3:00 p.m. Program details are to be announced.

Pianist Maurizio Pollini concludes his three-recital celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederic Chopin on Sunday, May 9 at 3:00 p.m. with an all-Chopin program including the Two Nocturnes, Op. 55 and 62; Three Mazurkas; Berceuse in D-flat Major; Barcarolle in F-sharp Major; Polonaise-fantaisie in A-flat Major; and Sonata No. 3 in B Minor.

Composer Louis Andriessen’s season-long residency as holder of the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair at Carnegie Hall comes to a conclusion on Monday, May 10 at 6:00 p.m. (note earlier start time) with a performance of Andriessen’s seminal, 1974 breakthrough work De Staat by Ensemble ACJW led by conductor John Adams, who conducted the work’s original US premiere. Pianist Jeremy Denk is also featured in Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Winds, and Adams’s own Son of Chamber Symphony completes the program.

On Tuesday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m., piano virtuoso Nicolas Hodges performs a recital featuring Beethoven’s Sonata No. 1 in F Minor; Rzewski’s Nanosonatas, Book 1; Dutilleux’s Three Preludes; and Schumann’s Sonata No. 1 in F-sharp Minor.

Carnegie Hall’s Family Concert series continues with the musical duo Polygraph Lounge on Saturday, May 15 at 1:00 p.m. in a concert filled with zany instruments, virtuosic improvisation, and song.

Conductor Pierre Boulez leads The MET Orchestra on Sunday, May 16 at 3:00 p.m. in their final Carnegie Hall performance this season with a program featuring Bartók’s The Wooden Prince and Schoenberg’s Erwartung with soprano Deborah Polaski.

The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-Möst return to Carnegie Hall on Friday, May 21 at 8:00 p.m. with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major “Eroica,” as well as Berg’s Lulu Suite with soprano Erin Morley.

On Wednesday, May 26 at 8:00 p.m., Ensemble ACJW performs Mozart’s Quintet for Horn and Strings, Steven Mackey’s Micro-Concerto, and Bartók’s String Quartet No. 6 at The Juilliard School’s Paul Hall.

The final Carnegie Hall Family Concert of the 2009–2010 season takes place on Saturday, June 5 at 1:00 p.m. in a concert exploring the world of music with help from the young professional musicians of Ensemble ACJW. Details are to be announced.
