PIANIST LOUIS LORTIE WILL REPLACE NELSON FREIRE
IN FEBRUARY 28 PERFORMANCE WITH LEIPZIG GEWANDHAUS ORCHESTRA

Carnegie Hall today announced that pianist Louis Lortie will replace pianist Nelson Freire on Sunday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m. as soloist with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, led by Riccardo Chailly, in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. Mr. Lortie will perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 11, with the orchestra, as originally announced. It is with regret that Mr. Freire has to cancel his performance due to tendonitis. Complete program information for both Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra performances on February 27 and 28 is listed below.

Canadian pianist Louis Lortie has performed numerous times in recital at Carnegie Hall, including an acclaimed performance of the complete Chopin Etudes in 2003. Mr. Lortie studied in Montreal with Yvonne Hubert, in Vienna with Beethoven specialist Dieter Weber, and subsequently with Leon Fleisher, among others. Also celebrated for his interpretation of works by Beethoven, Mr. Lortie has performed the complete Beethoven sonatas in London's Wigmore Hall, Toronto's Ford Center, the Berliner Philharmonie, and the Sala Grande del Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. With the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, he has performed and conducted all five Beethoven piano concertos and, more recently, the complete Mozart piano concertos. Born in Montreal, Mr. Lortie made his debut with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal at age 13. He made his debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra three years later, which then engaged him for an historic tour of the People's Republic of China and Japan. In 1984, he won First Prize in the Busoni Competition and was a prize-winner at the Leeds Competition. In 1992, he was named Officer of the Order of Canada, and received both the Ordre national du Québec and an honorary doctorate from Université Laval.
