CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS MEZZO-SOPRANO OLGA BORODINA
IN RECITAL WITH PIANIST DMITRI YEFIMOV ON
FEBRUARY 25 IN STERN AUDITORIUM/PERELMAN STAGE

Program Includes Works by “The Five:” Rimsky-Korsakov, Cui, Mussorgsky,
Borodin, and Balakirev as well as Shostakovich and Sviridov

On Thursday, February 25 at 8:00 p.m., acclaimed Russian mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina performs in recital with pianist Dmitri Yefimov in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. Their program includes a selection of works by “The Five,” or “The Mighty Handful,” a circle of Russian composers who met in St. Petersburg between 1856–1870: Mily Balakirev, César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Alexander Borodin. The group made it their goal to specifically create Russian art music, rather than works that they thought imitated older European music or relied on European-style conservatory training. Also on Ms. Borodina’s program are Spanish Songs by Dmitri Shostakovich and works by Georgy Sviridov. The complete program is listed below.

In 1992, mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina made her European debut in London at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, sharing the stage with Plácido Domingo in Samson and Delilah. These performances launched her international career, and she has since performed regularly at many of the major opera houses around the world. Ms. Borodina made her American debut in 1995 at San Francisco Opera in La Cenerentola, returning there for her first Carmen in 1996 as well as The Tzar’s Bride (2000), Samson and Delilah (2001 and 2006), and Italiana in Algerie (2005). In 1997, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Boris Godunov and returned for the opening night of the 1998–1999 season in Samson and Delilah with Mr. Domingo under the direction of James Levine. Subsequent engagements at the Metropolitan Opera have included Amneris in Aida, Carmen, Delilah in Samson and Delilah, Isabella in Italiana in Algerie, Giocconda, and Eboli in Don Carlo. Highlights of Ms. Borodina’s 2009–2010 season include Marguerite in La Damnation of Faust and Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera, concert performances in Paris, Prague, and Finland as well as the Salzburg Festival with conductor Ricardo Muti. Ms. Borodina has recorded for the Philips Classics label, highlights of which include Khovanchina, Pique Dame, War and Peace, Prince Igor, Boris Godunov, Eugene Onegin, La Forza del Destino, among other operas, with such noted conductors as Valery Gergiev, Bernard Haitink, and Sir Colin Davis. Olga Borodina was awarded People’s Artist of Russia in 2002, and is the recipient of the State Prize of Russia.

Pianist Dmitri Yefimov was born in 1965 in Leningrad. He started his musical education at the age of five, studied with Professor Egrov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and completed his post-graduate course in 1992. He was awarded the diploma “Best Accompanist” at the all-union vocal competition in Alma-Ata in 1992 and received another diploma at the Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Parma, Italy, in 1992. He has performed as a soloist and accompanist in Russia, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the United States and is a regular accompanist of Olga Borodina, with whom he has performed worldwide. Since 1992, Mr. Yefimov has taught solo piano at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and has released two recordings of Beethoven Piano Sonatas in the “Audiophile Classics” series by Movieplay/Intermusic S.A.
