CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS AN EVENING OF BOSSA NOVA
AND CLASSIC AMERICAN SONG WITH PIANIST & VOCALIST
ELIANE ELIAS ON FEBRUARY 17 IN ZANKEL HALL

On Wednesday, February 17 at 10:00 p.m. in Zankel Hall, pianist and vocalist Eliane Elias performs an evening of classic bossa nova and favorites from the Great American Songbook. Backed by her quartet—featuring bassist Marc Johnson, guitarist Rubens de La Corte, and drummer Rafael Barata—and singing in English and Portuguese, Elias will pay tribute to the recent 50th anniversary of the bossa nova as documented on her latest release, Bossa Nova Stories (Blue Note/EMI). This performance is the second in Carnegie Hall’s three-part Shape of Jazz series, presented in partnership with Absolutely Live Entertainment, LLC. The series concludes on April 7 with renowned saxophonist, flutist, and NEA Jazz Master James Moody in an all-star celebratory performance marking his 85th birthday.

Known for a musical style that blends her Brazilian roots and sensuous vocals with instrumental jazz and classical composition finesse, pianist, singer, and songwriter Eliane Elias began performing in her native Brazil as a teenager, before moving to New York and landing a spot in the acclaimed jazz fusion group Steps Ahead. Since launching her solo career in the mid-1980s, Elias has released 18 critically acclaimed albums documenting dozens of original compositions, as well as her distinctive arrangements and interpretations of popular jazz, pop, and bossa nova standards. Elias is also considered to be one of the great interpreters of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, and she has been featured in numerous tributes to the singer/composer, in addition to having recorded two albums solely dedicated to his works: Eliane Elias Plays Jobim and Eliane Elias Sings Jobim. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Solo Performance for her 1995 release Solos and Duets with Herbie Hancock—a recording hailed by Musician Magazine as “a landmark in piano duo history.”

Elias’s most recent album, Bossa Nova Stories, was released in the U.S. in January 2009 and was noted by The New York Times as an “impeccably alluring” listening experience. Accompanied by a full orchestra and rhythm section on the recording, Elias performs classics including “The Girl From Ipanema,” “Desafinado,” and “Chega de Saudade.” The album debuted at #2 on both the Overall and Traditional Jazz Charts, and #2 on Top Latin Album Charts.
