Versatile trumpeter/composer and two-time Grammy Award-nominated artist Dave Douglas will lead 11 young musicians in an exploration of new works and innovative collaborations during a week-long Professional Training Workshop from February 7–12, 2010. Presented by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI), this workshop will bring together participants from diverse musical backgrounds, between the ages of 18 and 35, to work with Mr. Douglas and guest artists, pianist Uri Caine and drummer Clarence Penn, on the creation, rehearsal, and production of original works involving improvisation. Chosen by audition, the workshop participants are up-and-coming composer-performers and will be exposed to a variety of skills and career opportunities during sessions on composition and score-making, ear training, rehearsal techniques, assessment of developing works, and improvisational playing.

As part of the workshop, Mr. Douglas will bring together his quintet and a selection of these young artists to perform a free jazz concert on Thursday, February 11 at 8:00 p.m. at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, Queens. This concert will be part of Carnegie Hall’s Neighborhood Concert Series and is free, but an RSVP is required and reservations can be made by calling 718-482-5151.

The workshop will culminate with a final performance by the participants in Zankel Hall on Friday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. The Carnegie Hall program will include premieres of works written and rehearsed by participants during the workshop as well as an original composition by Dave Douglas, performed by the young musicians. Workshop participants include Chad Lefkowitz-Brown (saxophone), Nadie Eden Bareket (baritone saxophone), Nadje Noordhuis (trumpet), Philip Dizack (trumpet), Dan Peck (tuba), Johannes Dickbauer (violin), Rizpah Lowe (harp), Hui-Chun Lin (cello), Linda Oh (bass), Kristijan Krajncan (percussion), and Sam Harris (piano).

For WMI’s Professional Training Workshops, music enthusiasts, teachers, and students can apply to become auditors to enjoy the rare opportunity of seeing world-class artists engage with young up-and-coming musicians during various stages of the artistic learning process. Auditors observe behind the scenes instruction and are able to experience a more personal connection to world-renowned instructors and aspiring young musicians. Information and an application to audit specific workshops can be found on each workshop page at carnegiehall.org/article/explore_and_learn/ptw/.

About Professional Training Workshops
Professional Training Workshops presented by The Weill Music Institute are designed for artists between the ages of 18 to 35 and offer a unique opportunity for young musicians to explore performance and rehearsal practices, as well as specialized repertoire with some of today’s leading artists. Workshops include master classes and sessions of intensive performance preparation for emerging professional musicians, led by artists from many different musical styles and backgrounds. Most workshops feature at least one element that is accessible to the public in the form of a concert or open master class. Travel and housing for participants traveling from outside of New York City is arranged and paid for by Carnegie Hall. The workshops are tuition-free for participants and open for observation by auditors. Additional information and online applications are available at carnegiehall.org/workshops.

In addition to this Professional Training Workshop led by Dave Douglas, WMI will present two upcoming workshops this season, one led by the Kronos Quartet, as part of its Carnegie Hall Perspectives series, on expanding the repertoire for string quartets with guest artist Wu Man (March 14–21, 2010); and another by pianist Leon Fleisher focusing on Brahms chamber music with guest artists Yo-Yo Ma and Pamela Frank (May 3–9, 2010).

About the Workshop Leaders
Two-time Grammy Award-nominated jazz musician Dave Douglas is one of the most prolific and original trumpeters and composers of his generation. From his New York base, Mr. Douglas has continued to earn national and international acclaim including Trumpeter, Composer, and Jazz "Artist of the Year" designations by such organizations as the New York Jazz Awards, Down Beat, Jazz Times, Jazziz, and the Italian Jazz Critics' Society. His solo recording career began in 1993 with Parallel Worlds on Soul Note, and he has since released over 28 recordings. In 2005, after seven critically-acclaimed albums for Bluebird/RCA, Mr. Douglas launched his own record label, Greenleaf Music. The same year, he was honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship. On Greenleaf, Mr. Douglas has released albums with his long standing quintet, the electronic sextet Keystone; his Brass Ecstasy group featuring trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, and drums; and the mixed chamber ensemble Nomad. His latest release, A Single Sky, is a collaboration with Jim McNeely and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band showcasing Mr. Douglas’ first large-scale big band arrangements and some of his past works reimagined by McNeely for big band. Mr. Douglas is currently the Artistic Director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Centre and the co-founder and Director of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, which will celebrate its eighth year in 2010. In addition to leading his own groups, Mr. Douglas has an important ongoing musical relationship as a member of John Zorn's Masada and with artists such as Anthony Braxton, Don Byron, Joe Lovano, Miguel Zenon, Uri Caine, Bill Frisell, Cibo Matto, Mark Dresser, Han Bennink, and Misha Mengelberg. As a composer, Mr. Douglas has been commissioned by the Trisha Brown Dance Company, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Essen Philharmonie, Library of Congress, and Stanford University. Recent large scale works have included “Blue Latitudes” for chamber orchestra and three improvisers, and “Delighted States” for big band with soloists.

Born in Philadelphia, Uri Caine began studying piano with Bernard Peiffer and played in bands led by Philly Joe Jones, Hank Mobley, Johnny Coles, Mickey Roker, Odean Pope, Jymmie Merritt, Bootsie Barnes, and Grover Washington. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and studied music composition with George Rochberg and George Crumb. Since moving to New York City, Mr. Caine has released 20 recordings, including his latest release Plastic Temptation. Mr. Caine was the Director of the Venice Biennale for Music in September 2003. He has performed his version of the Diabelli Variations with orchestras including The Cleveland Orchestra, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the CBC Orchestra in Canada, and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. From 2006 to 2009 he was composer-in-residence for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and premiered his Concerto for Two Pianos and Chamber Orchestra with Jeffrey Kahane in May 2006. In 2009, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for The Othello Syndrome. Over the past few years, Mr. Caine has worked in groups led by Don Byron, Dave Douglas, John Zorn, Terry Gibbs and Buddy DeFranco, Clark Terry, Rashid Ali, Arto Lindsay, Sam Rivers, and Barry Altschul as well as the Enja Band, Global Theory, and the Master Musicians of Jajouka. He has received grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Pew Foundation. He has performed at many jazz festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz Festival, San Sebastian Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, as well as classical festivals and series including the Salzburg Festival, Munich Opera, Holland Festival, Israel Festival, IRCAM, and Great Performers at Lincoln Center.

Drummer Clarence Penn has played in a semi-professional capacity since the age of 15 and has toured, performed, and recorded with a veritable list of musical stars, including Betty Carter, Ellis Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Roberta Flack, Dizzy Gillespie, Dianne Reeves, Cyrus Chestnut, Steps Ahead, Dave Douglas, Mike Stern, and Rachel Z. One of the most sought after drummers of his generation, Mr. Penn received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to study with the late, renowned drummer, Alan Dawson, in 1989. That same year, Mr. Penn was asked by Ellis Marsalis to join his trio and eventually accompanied him, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, and bassist Reginald Veal to Japan to perform at the famous Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival. Impressed with Penn’s talent, Lewis Nash recommended him to Betty Carter during one of her many searches for talented musicians. Nash gave Penn such a glowing recommendation that Carter hired him without an audition. Remaining with Carter for several years, Mr. Penn went on to play with Stanley Clarke and soon after became a part of the Cyrus Chestnut Trio and the Stephen Scott Trio. In 1995, he joined the popular fusion group Steps Ahead, recording two albums, one of which included his own composition. He has also recorded and performed with David Sanchez, Slide Hampton, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Barron, Makoto Ozone, Kevin Mahogany, and many others. In 1996, the esteemed independent jazz label Criss Cross invited Mr. Penn to record his first album as a bandleader, titled Penn's Landing. Soon after its release, The New York Times named it one of the best records of the year.
