Zany Duo Polygraph Lounge Offers a “Sound Playground”
for Children to Explore, With Tickets Offered for Only $6

The McGraw-Hill Companies CarnegieKids, a program for Pre-K and Kindergarten age children, returns this season on January 27, 28, and 30 and March 4, 5, and 6 with two performances each day at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in its new venue, Zankel Hall. Presented by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, children are invited to sing and interact with the musical duo Polygraph Lounge during an exciting 45-minute “Sound Playground” event. This introductory music program for Pre-K and Kindergarten students encourages sound exploration and active music making. Tickets are only $6 each.

Born on New York City's Lower East Side, Polygraph Lounge is the multi-instrumentalist, song and comedy duo of Rob Schwimmer and Mark Stewart, who specialize in musical mayhem. Polygraph Lounge returns to CarnegieKids for a second season in January 2010 with a series of concerts that will pose the question: “Could That Be Music?” via clever original songs entitled “CouldaWouldaShoulda!”, “LMNOP”, and “I Am Rhythm.” Audience members will have the opportunity to participate in these songs through interactive call and response techniques, movement, and imitating the artists. For the March series of programs, concerts will answer the question: “What is a Soundmaker?” through inventive songs such as the “Siren Song” and “The Sounds that Surround Us” as well as through creatively exploring sounds both from our environment and from unusual and made-up instruments such as the magical theremin, the “slide whistle organ,” and the “trombadoo,” a hybrid didgeridoo-trombone.

About Polygraph Lounge
Mark Stewart and Rob Schwimmer have performed and recorded with an impressive and eclectic array of today’s music luminaries from Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder to Wayne Shorter and Antonio Carlos Jobim to Steve Reich and Queen Latifah. Plundering the treasures of the past, present, and future, optioning the cultural currency of every imaginable genre, strip mining the flatlands of free-association, sinking to the lowest common denominator and climbing the highest ivory tower, they are inspired lunatics on a musical mission. Their arsenal includes a dijeridoo, a theremin, a melodica, a grand piano, a tin whistle, a length of pipe, an electric guitar, two fine singing voices, a pair of rapier-sharp wits, choreography for the whole audience, and a battery of handmade, one-of-a-kind instruments. In the words of The New York Times, “mad genius should always be this much fun.”

Multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, and instrument designer Mark Stewart has been heard around the world performing old and new music. A founding member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars and guitarist and musical director for Paul Simon, Mark is also a member of Steve Reich and Musicians, David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness, The Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, Arnold Dreyblatt's Orchestra of Excited Strings, and Zeena Parkins' Gangster Band. He has worked with Anthony Braxton, Bob Dylan, Cecil Taylor, Meredith Monk, Edie Brickell, and Paul McCartney. He has played for the Broadway shows Showboat, The Who's Tommy, The Sound of Music, Carousel, and The Lion King.

Rob Schwimmer is a composer-pianist and thereminist who has performed and recorded throughout the world. His compositions have been featured in theater, television series, documentaries, and feature films including the 2008 Academy Award Winner "Freeheld". In addition to Polygraph Lounge, Schwimmer has worked and played with Simon and Garfunkel (most recently the 2009 summer tour of New Zealand, Australia, and Japan as well as appearing on their CD/DVD Old Friends: Live On Stage), Wayne Shorter, Bobby McFerrin, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, Adam Guettel, Chaka Khan, Laurie Anderson, Bette Midler, The Klezmatics, Matthew Barney, Ang Lee, Bela Fleck, Mabou Mines, Geoffrey Holder, John Cale, Steve Buscemi, Alwin Nikolai/Murray Louis Dance Company, Henry Jaglom, Talujon Percussion Quartet, Fred Anderson, Marc Ribot, C&C Music Factory, and Sammy Davis, Jr. Mr. Schwimmer is one of the few theremin virtuosos in the world and is an original member of the NY Theremin Society and was one of the chosen participants in the historic 10-Piece Theremin Orchestra at Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
