Wide Variety of Musicians in All Five Boroughs of New York City
“Community Sing” Events in the Bronx with
Young People’s Chorus of New York City on February 3
and at the Apollo Theater with A Cappella Group Take 6 on March 12
The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall’s line-up of free Neighborhood Concerts and “Community Sing” events continues this winter with a wide variety of performances presented throughout New York City’s five boroughs, including concerts by Latin Caribbean group Son de Madre, string quartet ETHEL, Haitian vocalist Emeline Michel, and a cappella group Take 6. For more than 30 years, Carnegie Hall has presented free Neighborhood Concerts for all ages in collaboration with museums, colleges, libraries, community centers, churches, and cultural organizations, with music reflecting the diverse sounds of the city and Carnegie Hall's quality programming.
Highlights from January to March 2010 include:
- Chris Washburne and the S.Y.O.T.O.S. Band (“See You On the Other Side”) perform Latin jazz music on Saturday, January 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Flushing Branch of the Queens Library. The group's name refers to a time in 1992 when Mr. Washburne was diagnosed with severe nerve cancer and told that he had only a 50-50 chance of surviving an operation. Before he went into the hospital, he played one more concert with his bandmates and said to them "see you on the other side." He survived the operation and has managed to become an even better player.
- On Wednesday, February 3 at 6:30 p.m., WMI presents its second interactive “Community Sing” event of the season, featuring the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) performing at Lehman College in the Bronx. Come sing along with the chorus at this free event! Under Founder and Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez, YPC has provided children of diverse abilities and ethnic backgrounds with a unique program of music appreciation and choral performance, while maintaining a model of artistic excellence and harmony that enriches the community.
- As part of a WMI Professional Training Workshop led by two-time Grammy Award-nominated jazz musician Dave Douglas, Mr. Douglas will bring the participants from the workshop and his friends together to perform a free jazz concert on Thursday, February 11 at 8:00 p.m. at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City. RSVP is required.
- ETHEL, a contemporary string quartet comprised of Juilliard-trained musicians, performs on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Pregones Theater in the Bronx. Formed in 1998, the quartet performs adventurous music of the past four decades including repertoire by Julia Wolfe, Phil Kline, David Lang, John Zorn, Steve Reich, Scott Johnson, Don Byron, Evan Ziporyn, and Mary Ellen Childs, among others.
- On Saturday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m., Haitian vocalist Emeline Michel, who sings in both French and Haitian Creole, performs at the Brooklyn Museum. Born in Gonaives, Haiti, Ms. Michel first sang at her local church and later went on to study at the Detroit Jazz Center. For the past two decades, Ms. Michel has recorded numerous albums and performed on concert stages throughout the Caribbean, Europe, and North and South America.
- Son de Madre, a group of musicians who come from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Israel, Argentina, Italy, and the U.S., performs on Sunday, March 7 at 3:00 p.m. at the Leon M. Goldstein Performing Arts Center at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. The group, which was featured in the Weill Music Institute’s school-based program Musical Explorers for 2nd and 3rd graders earlier this year, mixes all of the music from their different birthplaces into one sound. The group recently finished recording their debut album, Rumberos.
- A cappella sextet Take 6 leads a “Community Sing” event on Friday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem. This vocal ensemble has won 10 Grammy Awards and released their latest album, The Standard, in 2008 with featured guests including Aaron Neville, Al Jarreau, George Benson, and Brian McKnight. Take 6 is made up of vocalists Mark Kibble, Claude V. McKnight III, Dr. Cedric Dent, David Thomas, Alvin Chea, and Joey Kibble. The group launched their career by singing traditional spirituals and gospel music and has continued to embrace those genres and mix them with soul, R&B, pop, and jazz.
- On Tuesday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m., Sameer Gupta—a percussionist and tabla player specializing in improvisational styles of jazz, world, and fusion music—performs at the Hudson Guild in Manhattan. Mr. Gupta has lived and performed around the world. He currently studies with tabla master Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, having spent several years under the guidance of legendary tabla master Zakir Hussain.
