CARNEGIE HALL TO PARTNER WITH SPAIN’S NIEMEYER CENTER
Musicians from The Academy—A Program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School,
and Weill Music Institute—To Take Part in Week-Long Residency in Late 2010
(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE; December 4, 2009, Asturias, Spain)—Carnegie Hall and Niemeyer Center, the new Spanish international cultural center, have announced a new partnership that will bring some of the world’s finest young professional musicians to Asturias, Spain in late 2010 for a week-long residency to include public performances and workshops with local music students.
More than a dozen musicians from The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—are scheduled to visit Asturias late next year, presenting public performances at Niemeyer Center and leading workshops with local conservatory students. Clive Gillinson, Executive and Artistic Director of Carnegie Hall, traveled to Spain on December 3 and 4, 2009, where he met with Ms. Pilar Varela, Mayor of Avilés, and Mr. Vicente Álvarez Areces, President of the Principality of Asturias. Following a visit to the Niemeyer Center construction site with the Mayor, Mr. Gillinson participated in a press conference at Government Palace in Oviedo with Mr. Álvarez Areces and Mr. Natalio Grueso, director of Niemeyer Center, to officially announce this new international collaboration.
Established in 2007,
The Academy is a new and innovative leadership program for young professional musicians, designed to develop the skills and values necessary for careers that combine musical excellence with education, community engagement, and advocacy. The two-year program provides Academy fellows—all graduates of leading international music schools and conservatories—with opportunities to perform at Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and venues throughout New York City; to teach in public schools; to engage in local communities and college campuses; and to support this work through professional development. Since its debut, concerts by Ensemble ACJW, the performing arm of The Academy, have been met with the highest critical acclaim. Through new projects with partners such as Niemeyer Center, Academy fellows have increasingly been granted the opportunity to share their expertise, passion for music, and belief in giving back to the community with ever wider audiences.
