CARNEGIE HALL FEBRUARY 2010 HIGHLIGHTS

After leading his ensemble Europa Galante at Carnegie Hall in January, violinist Fabio Biondi returns on Monday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m. with harpsichord player Paola Poncet, performing a recital of works by Vivaldi, Veracini, J. S. Bach, Locatelli, and Lonati.

On Monday, February 1 at 8:00 p.m., the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Music Director James Levine perform the third of four Carnegie Hall concerts this season, and are joined by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard for Elliott Carter’s Dialogues, for Piano and Orchestra and Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. Also on the program are Berlioz’s Harold in Italy with violist Steven Ansell and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2.

Pianist Radu Lupu performs a solo recital on Tuesday, February 2 at 8:00 p.m. of works by Janáček, Beethoven, and Schubert. Mr. Lupu returns on Monday, February 15 at 8:00 p.m. as featured soloist in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Paavo Järvi, on a program that also features orchestral works by Ravel, Bach, and Lutosławski.

On Friday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m., the Leipzig String Quartet perform Haydn’s String Quartet in B-flat Major, No. 4, "Sunrise;" Janáček’s String Quartet No. 2, "Intimate Letters;" and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor.

Ensemble ACJW, featuring musicians of The Academy, continues its third annual residency at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, and is slated to play the first public concert in Ladd Concert Hall, part of the new Zankel Music Center on Friday, February 5 at 8:00 p.m. On Tuesday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m., the ensemble repeats this program in Weill Recital Hall, which includes Prokofiev’s Quintet in G Minor, David Bruce’s Gumboots for Clarinet and String Quartet, and Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor.

On Tuesday, February 9 at 8:00 p.m., the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra makes its first New York appearance under its new Music Director Manfred Honeck. Mr. Honeck leads the orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 and Brahms’s Violin Concerto with soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

Singer, pianist, and renowned interpreter of the Great American Songbook, Michael Feinstein continues his Carnegie Hall series, Standard Time with Michael Feinstein, on Wednesday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, February 10 at 8:00 p.m., pianist Emanuel Ax continues his celebration of the 200th birthday years of Chopin and Schumann with a solo recital, performing Chopin’s Polonaise-fantaisie in A-flat Major and Four Mazurkas, and Schumann’s Fantasy in C Major and Fantasiestücke. The program also features the world premiere of a Carnegie Hall commission: Thomas Adès’s Three Mazurkas. (Adès’s work replaces the previously announced commission by John Adams.)

As part of Carnegie Hall’s Distinctive Debuts series, Carnegie Hall presents the ATOS Trio, most recent winners of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award. It performs Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C Minor, Gaspar Cassadó’s Piano Trio, and Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major on Friday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m.

In his first Carnegie Hall appearance as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, Alan Gilbert leads the orchestra on Saturday, February 13 at 8:00 p.m. in a performance featuring the US premiere of Magnus Lindberg’s Clarinet Concerto with soloist Kari Kriikku. The program also includes Wagner’s Rienzi Overture and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Chief Conductor Mariss Jansons perform two concerts at Carnegie Hall in February. On Tuesday, February 16 at 8:00 p.m., violinist Janine Jansen is soloist in Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, on a program that also includes Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 in E Minor. On Wednesday, February 17 at 8:00 p.m., Mr. Jansons leads the orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with mezzo-soprano Jill Grove, the New York Choral Artists under Chorus Director Joseph Flummerfelt, and The American Boychoir under Music Director Fernando Malvar-Ruiz.

On Wednesday, February 17 at 8:30 p.m., singer, pianist, and songwriter Eliane Elias headlines the second Shape of Jazz series concert in Zankel Hall with her band-mates Marc Johnson (bass), Rubens de La Corte (guitar), and Rafael Barata (drums). This critically-acclaimed artist’s distinctive style blends her Brazilian roots with alluring vocals and jazz roots. Her most recent release, Bossa Nova Stories, celebrates the 50th anniversary of Bossa Nova music, and debuted at #2 on the Billboard Jazz Charts.

Celebrated folk singer and guitarist Richie Havens performs an intimate concert in Zankel Hall on Friday, February 19 at 8:30 p.m., concluding this season’s WFUV Live at Zankel series.

On Saturday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m., the Takács Quartet makes its second of three Zankel Hall appearances this season with a program including Schumann’s String Quartet in F Major, the New York premiere of James MacMillan’s String Quartet No. 3, and Beethoven’s String Quartet in E Minor, “Razumovsky.”

The Orchestra of St. Luke’s returns to Carnegie Hall with conductor Sir Roger Norrington on Sunday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m. performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor with soprano Jessica Rivera, mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor, tenor Eric Cutler, and bass-baritone Wayne Tigges. Also on the program is Haydn’s Symphony No. 99 in E-flat Major.

On Tuesday, February 23 at 8:00 p.m., Valery Gergiev conducts the Mariinsky Orchestra in a performance of Berlioz’s epic theatrical work Roméo et Juliette with soloists from the Mariinsky Theater and the Chorus of the Mariinsky Theater under chorus master Andrei Petrenko. (Gergiev returns to Carnegie Hall in March with the same forces to perform a concert version of Berlioz’s opera Les Troyens over two nights.)

Ensemble ACJW, featuring musicians of The Academy, perform at the Greenwich Village’s (Le) Poisson Rouge on Wednesday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. Program is to be announced.

On Thursday, February 25 at 8:00 p.m., mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina and pianist Dmitri Yefimov perform in recital. Program details are to be announced. (Please note this concert replaces the previously announced recital by Magdalena Kožená and Yefim Bronfman. All tickets to the originally announced concert will be honored.)

Violinist Christian Tetzlaff performs chamber music on Saturday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 28 at 7:30 p.m. with cellist Tanja Tetzlaff and pianist Lars Vogt with programs including both of Schubert’s piano trios and works by Dvořák and Shostakovich.

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Music Director Riccardo Chailly perform on Saturday, February 27 at 8:00 p.m. when they are joined by soloist Nikolaj Znaider for Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto; also on the program is Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, "From the New World." On Sunday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m., pianist Nelson Freire is featured in Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor on a program also including Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major.
