All of the passion—the irresistible love, the long-simmering anger, the cathartic sadness—of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet bursts out of Prokofiev’s music from his famous ballet. And you can practically hear van Gogh’s Starry Night—the painting that Dutilleux took as his inspiration—in Timbres, espace, mouvement. This is a program of amazing color and virtuosity.

James MacMillan’s new work was acclaimed as a “big virtuoso concerto in the late–19th century mold” by the UK’s Guardian last year. The review also praised Vadim Repin’s premiere performance as a “tour de force.” Conjuring the sounds of Scottish fiddle music and Romantic-era fireworks, this music fits perfectly with works by Berlioz and Tchaikovsky.
