Perspectives artist Tetzlaff demonstrates all that makes him a leading virtuoso on his instrument, taking the lead on every piece of this program. He probes deeply into the full range of the repertoire, including Mozart, British composer Harrison Birtwistle, and Bartók.

Boston Symphony Orchestra Assistant Conductor Marcelo Lehninger will replace James Levine for this performance. Maestro Levine is forced to cancel his appearances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra due to ill effects from a recent procedure addressing his ongoing back issues, further complicated by a viral infection.

Seiji Ozawa and Seiji Ozawa Ongaku-juku (Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Orchestra) must regrettably cancel their performances this spring as Maestro Ozawa continues to recuperate from recent surgery. This concert will not be rescheduled this season.

Stalin hated Shostakovich—especially his notorious opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, which the Communist government banned in 1936—but the tuneful populism of the Fifth Symphony appeased the dictator and his Soviet authorities when it premiered a year later. The Chicago Symphony and Muti close out their three-night stay at Carnegie Hall with this piece, hailed today as Shostakovich’s most popular work.
