National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America
Overview
In the summer of
2013, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute launches the National Youth
Orchestra of the United States of America, an opportunity for the finest young
players from around the nation to come together with their peers, a faculty of
leading orchestral musicians, and a world-class conductor for an intensive two-week
residency followed by an international tour. NYO-USA will shine a light on the
extraordinary talent of young American instrumentalists, showcasing the
vibrancy and diversity of this group and offering each participant a
life-changing musical and cultural experience.
The orchestra
will be conducted each year by one of the world’s leading maestros—Valery
Gergiev in 2013—and the participating musicians will be taught and mentored by a
“dream team” of first-chair players from the most celebrated American orchestras.
Carnegie Hall seeks
applicants from across the country to represent all facets of America in what will
be the country’s only national orchestra of its kind.
NYO-USA, which
runs from June 30 through July 23 in 2013, is tuition-free for all participants,
including room and board; all rehearsal, teaching, and performance activities;
and all costs associated with the concert tour. There is a $30 application fee,
and invited musicians will be responsible for arranging their own travel to and
from the New York City area. In cases of substantial financial need, an
application fee waiver or travel stipend may be requested.
Mission
The
mission of NYO-USA is to foster the growth and development of the finest young
musicians in the nation. The players will interact with fellow musicians from
around the country and receive training and performance opportunities at the
highest level. They will also represent the US at home and abroad during an
annual concert tour to some of the world’s greatest concert halls.
Eligibility/Application
NYO-USA
is open to all US citizens or Permanent Residents (Green Card holders) ages 16–19,
excluding full-time music students.
Musicians who wish to participate in 2013 will be asked to register online by
September 7, 2012, and complete their application, which will include an
audition video, by November 1, 2012. Please see the FAQ for more information
