Community Sing: Soweto Gospel Choir
Emmanuel Baptist Church
Experience the magic of ensemble singing by attending one of Carnegie Hall’s Community Sings—designed for all ages, no experience necessary. You’ll learn what it takes to be a member of these dynamic groups and experience the power of singing for yourself.
Expect earthy polyrhythms, rich harmonies, a cappella singing, and a host of electrifying musicians and percussionists. Add soulful dancing and vibrant, colorful costumes, and the mix is unstoppable. In 10 years of existence, the young, dynamic Soweto Gospel Choir has performed for heads of state and religious icons (including patron Desmond Tutu), toured internationally several times, and won a collection of Grammys. The group performs traditional and contemporary South African music, blending elements of African gospel, Negro spirituals, reggae, and American popular music.
