CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS
Performance Sunday, Mar 27, 2011 | 3 PM

Jeremy Denk

Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
Whenever Denk steps onstage, plaudits inevitably follow. Critics nationwide have praised “the chops, the brains, and the heart” (The New Yorker) that are hallmarks of his go-for-broke style, and his February Zankel Hall recital left “audience members gasping for superlatives” (The New York Times). Now, he’s back at Carnegie Hall—this time in the inestimable Stern/Perelman. Find out what has everyone buzzing.

Jeremy Denk has graciously agreed to replace Maurizio Pollini, who unfortunately must cancel his appearance due to illness.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH
The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I

The collection of 24 preludes and fugues in Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier showcases the composer’s methods as a teacher, his skills as a performer, and the capacity of the instrument itself. The prelude and fugue pairs move through each of the 12 major and minor keys, demonstrating the efficiency of Bach’s new tuning system that was well adapted to all 24 keys at a time when keyboards had to be re-tuned specifically for each. The Well-Tempered Clavier also surveys a wide range of styles and techniques that are meant to both train the advanced student and satisfy the accomplished performer.
This performance is part of the Great Artists I and Great Artists I Students series.
