Bios

  • Jamie Barton

    A winner of the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton is also a recent graduate of the Houston Grand Opera Studio.

    In the 2009–2010 season, Ms. Barton debuts with the Metropolitan Opera as Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte and sings Emilia in Otello with the Canadian Opera Company. Ms. Barton also returns to Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as Marcellina in Le nozze de Figaro. In concert, the Vocal Arts Society presents Ms. Barton in recital at the Kennedy Center, under the auspices of the Marilyn Horne Foundation. Additional concert engagements include Bernstein's Opening Prayer and Symphony No. 1, "Jeremiah," with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop.

    In recent seasons, Ms. Barton appeared with the Houston Grand Opera as Ursula in Béatrice et Bénédict, Giovanna in Rigoletto, and Mrs. Rolandson in the world premiere of André Previn's Brief Encounter. She also appeared as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly at Opera Theater of St. Louis. Ms. Barton made her Weill Recital Hall debut in a duo recital with tenor Russell Thomas, presented by the Marilyn Horne Foundation. In summer 2009, she joined the Wolf Trap Opera Company in the role of Penelope in Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria and gave a series of recitals with pianist Steven Blier. With the Aspen Music Festival, Ms. Barton appeared in recital with bass-baritone Ryan McKinny, in concert with the Aspen Chamber Symphony, and as the Witch in Hänsel und Gretel.

    An avid recitalist, Ms. Barton has appeared in the Marilyn Horne Foundation's On Wings of Song recital series, and she made her Spivey Hall (Georgia) debut singing Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, which was broadcast on NPR. Ms. Barton also received extensive training as a recitalist at the Tanglewood Music Center, where she worked with with James Levine, Dawn Upshaw, Phyllis Curtin, and Ira Siff, among others.

  • Kathleen Kelly

    Kathleen Kelly holds the dual titles Head of Music Staff and Studio Music Director at the Houston Grand Opera. She made her conducting debut in that company's critically acclaimed Basil Twist production of Hänsel und Gretel, which she led in her own arrangement for chamber ensemble. She served as assistant conductor, coach, and prompter at the Metropolitan Opera from 1998 to 2006, and during her time there, she assisted James Levine on major German pieces such as Berg's Wozzeck and Lulu; Strauss's Elektra; and Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Tristan und Isolde, Lohengrin, Parsifal and Der Ring des Nibelungen. Ms. Kelly also assisted with Berlioz's Les Troyens, the world premiere of Tobias Picker's An American Tragedy, and the Met premieres of Schoenberg's Moses und Aron and William Bolcom's A View from the Bridge. She has coached under Andrew Davis, Donald Runnicles, Valery Gergiev, Charles Mackerras, and Houston Grand Opera's Patrick Summers.

    Ms. Kelly is an active recitalist, most notably with the Houston Grand Opera Studio and with the Marilyn Horne Foundation's On Wings of Song series, with which she made her Carnegie Hall debut in January 2009. This season she also makes her Kennedy Center debut in recital with Ms. Barton. In Houston, Ms. Kelly co-founded the Recitals at Rienzi series, as well as the Taste This! cabaret series at The Tasting Room. In September 2010, she joins the Vienna State Opera as Head of Music Staff.
