Bios

• Christianne Stotijn
  
  Christianne Stotijn earned her diploma for violin in 2000 at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. She pursued her vocal studies in Metz (France), London, and Amsterdam where, under the supervision of Udo Reinemann, she graduated in 2003 with the highest distinction. Since then, she has studied with Noelle Barker, Jard van Nes, and Dame Janet Baker.
  
  Ms. Stotijn has worked extensively with Bernard Haitink, an influential figure in her career. After her successful performances of Mahler’s Rückert Lieder with the Orchestre National de France and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Haitink’s baton, the conductor invited her to perform with the Boston and Chicago symphony orchestras, and at the BBC Proms and Lucerne Festival.
  
  Other conductors with whom Ms. Stotijn has collaborated include Claudio Abbado, René Jacobs, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Andrew Davis, Jaap van Zweden, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Philippe Herreweghe, Daniele Gatti, Marc Minkowski, Iván Fischer, and Mark Wigglesworth. Ms. Stotijn has performed with leading orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Gabrieli Consort, Deutsche Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, Akademie für Alte Musik, Teatro alla Scala Orchestra, Orchestre des Champs Élysées, and Concerto Köln. An impassioned recitalist, Ms. Stotijn has appeared in the world’s premiere concert halls, including the Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall, Musikverein, Carnegie Hall, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Théâtre du Châtelet, Mozarteum Salzburg, Palais des Beaux-Arts, and the Kennedy Center. Her operatic career has seen her in the roles of Pauline in The Queen of Spades at the Paris Opera, Ottavia in L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Netherlands Opera, and Cornelia in Giulio Cesare in Egitto at La Monnaie and Netherlands Opera.
  
  Ms. Stotijn records exclusively for Onyx Classics, having already recorded a CD of Schubert, Berg, and Wolf songs with Joseph Breinl; Mahler songs with Julius Drake; and a third CD of Tchaikovsky songs with Mr. Drake. In February 2006, she recorded Frank Martin’s Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke for MDG, for which she was awarded the ECHO Klassik Award in 2008. In 2010, she won the BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award for her Tchaikovsky Romances CD.
  
  Ms. Stotijn’s awards and prizes include the 2005–2006 ECHO Rising Stars Award, the 2005 Borletti Buitoni Trust Award, and the prestigious 2008 Dutch Music Prize. She was a BBC New Generation Artist until 2007.

• Joseph Breinl
  
  Born in Munich, Joseph Breinl studied piano with Karl-Hermann Mrongovius and Gitti Pirner before entering the Conservatorium van Amsterdam as a Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes scholarship holder. At the Conservatorium, he studied both solo and collaborative piano with Willem Brons and Rudolf Jansen. Mr. Breinl was a prize winner at the Wigmore Hall / Kohn Foundation International Song Competition in 2003, and in 2005 he was awarded the ECHO Rising Stars Award with mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn. Mr. Breinl also served as an accompanist and vocal coach at the Musikhochschule München.
  
  During his conservatory studies, leading vocal pianist Graham Johnson invited the young Breinl to study with him in London after hearing him play in a master class. Mr. Johnson awarded him the 2002 Klavier-Festival Ruhr scholarship and also became his teacher and mentor.
  
  Mr. Breinl has served as an accompanist at the Munich Opera Festival, Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch, and at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. He has performed at the Beethovenhalle Bonn, Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Wigmore Hall, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Mozarteum Salzburg, and Suntory Hall.
  
  As ECHO Rising Stars, Mr. Breinl and Ms. Stotijn have performed together at the Kölner Philharmonie, Vienna Konzerthaus, Stockholm Konzerthaus, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Concertgebouw, Symphony Hall (Birmingham), and Carnegie Hall. Mr. Breinl also collaborates regularly with Waltraud Meier and Mattijs van de Woerd, and has recently performed in recitals with Michelle Breedt, Udo Reinemann, and Miah Persson. In October 2010, Mr. Breinl became a professor of Song Interpretation at the Kunstuniversität Graz.
