Bios

  Kristian Bezuidenhout, who was born in South Africa in 1979, began his studies in Australia and completed them summa cum laude at the Eastman School of Music. He first gained international recognition at the age of 21 after winning the prestigious first prize and the audience prize in the Bruges Fortepiano Competition (2001)—only the third time the former prize has been awarded in the history of the competition.
  
  Mr. Bezuidenhout is a frequent guest artist with the world’s leading ensembles, including the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Orchestra of the 18th Century, Concerto Köln, The Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Collegium Vocale Gent, and the Handel and Haydn Society. He has performed with celebrated artists Frans Brüggen, Pieter Wispelwey, Daniel Hope, Viktoria Mullova, and Christopher Hogwood.
  
  Mr. Bezuidenhout divides his time between concerto, recital, and chamber music engagements, and has appeared in the early music festivals of Barcelona, Boston, Bruges, St. Petersburg, Venice, and Utrecht. Other festival performances include the Festival de Saintes, La Roque d’Anthéron, Musikfest Bremen, Tanglewood Festival, Mostly Mozart, and the Menuhin Festival Gstaad. He is now a guest professor at both Eastman and the Schola Cantorum in Basel.
  
  Plans for the future include concerts with the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées under Philippe Herreweghe, a Mendelssohn project with the Freiburger Baroque Orchestra and Gottfried von der Goltz, a tour with Les Arts Florissants, trio concerts with Viktoria Mullova and Pieter Wispelwey, and additional recordings for Harmonia Mundi.

• Mark Padmore
  
  Mark Padmore was born in London and grew up in Canterbury. After beginning his musical studies on the clarinet, he earned a choral scholarship to King’s College, Cambridge. Mr. Padmore has since enjoyed an esteemed international career, his performances in Bach’s Passions being among his most celebrated appearances.
  
  As an opera singer, Mr. Padmore has worked with directors Peter Brook, Katie Mitchell, Mark Morris, and Deborah Warner. Recent performances include the leading role in Harrison Birtwistle’s The Corridor and Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. He also recorded the title role in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito with René Jacobs, released by Harmonia Mundi. Future opera engagements include Captain Vere in Britten’s Billy Budd at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera.
  
  In concert, Mr. Padmore has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Vienna and New York philharmonics, Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also makes regular appearances with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
  
  Mr. Padmore has given recitals in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Madrid, Milan, Moscow, New York, and Paris. He appears frequently at Wigmore Hall in London, where he sang three Schubert song cycles in May 2008 and was an artist-in-residence during the 2009–2010 season. Composers who have written works for him include Mark-Anthony Turnage, Sally Beamish, and Huw Watkins.
  
  Mr. Padmore’s disc of Handel arias—As Steals the Morn, with The English Concert and Andrew Manze (Harmonia Mundi)—won the BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award in April 2008. Other releases include Haydn’s Creation for Deutsche Grammophon, Handel’s Messiah with Colin Davis and the London Symphony Orchestra, Britten’s Winter Words with Roger Vignoles, and Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise.
  
  Mr. Padmore has recently been awarded the 2010 Gramophone Solo Vocal Award for his recording of Schubert's Winterreise with Paul Lewis (Harmonia Mundi label).
