Neighborhood Concert: Juan-Carlos Formell & Johnny's Dream Club
The Bronx Museum of the Arts
Grammy-nominated Cuban guitarist-composer-vocalist Juan-Carlos Formell and a stellar lineup of Latin jazz masters reignite the connections between Cuban music and jazz as Johnny’s Dream Club. The music is an apocalyptic account of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora told in a delirious sequence of juxtapositions, alternating nightmare and reverie. It's a new dimension of Latin jazz: intense, lyrical, and dangerously dream-like.
Born in Havana in 1964, Formell had all the talents to become a voice of his generation. Instead, his work was suppressed by Cuba's government-controlled music industry because it didn’t fit into any official category. In 1993, he fled to New York and there recorded his debut album, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2000. Part prophet, part poet, Formell’s five albums have been hailed as magical realism in music.
